Frontiers feels very much like a DLC to the original as opposed to a full-fledge sequel with its reliance on the original but this isn’t an issue because of how good the first game is. All of these can be upgraded though and the final set of upgrades, two for each tower, are brand new and offer completely different strategies to try. Melee towers, magic towers, artillery and finally ranged towers. The four basic towers you can use are the same as the original. So like every tower defence game ever? I guess… You’ll work with four tower types, a reinforcement unit, and a meteor strike through the whole game too, things certainly don’t seem too special yet… The core format of each stage involves you being plopped into a situation, with a point to defend of course and then assembling different types of towers in order to prevent the waves of enemies from reaching their goal. The story is presented through stylised comic strips, unique to the Switch version, and they do a great job of establishing the context of the coming stages. It takes the original, and improves it in every way, innovating and experimenting whilst fine-tuning the Kingdom Rush formula.
KINGDOM RUSH FRONTIERS ENEMIES SERIES
The entire series of games are cartoon tower-defence titles set in various fantasy worlds, packed with tricky levels, super-strong heroes and creative tower types and enemies to take down. Kingdom Rush Frontiers is a sequel to the aptly named Kingdom Rush and was initially released in in 2013 on mobile and continued from where the first game left off. This will be in the second part of the review though, first, let’s look at the game itself! Starting with the core gameplay, where else would we go to begin? Soldiers… ASSEMBLE! I do have a few minor issues with this port that are entirely down to the Switch itself, mainly how it controls but we’ll deal with that later on.
KINGDOM RUSH FRONTIERS ENEMIES FULL
So the main things we’ll look at is the controls, as well as the DLC model and how the experience itself translates to the Switch! Frontiers is my favourite in the franchise and thus you can imagine I am full of praise for this version, to a degree that is. In this review, I’ll mainly focus on the key questions in regard to the Switch port, but I’ll still detail how the game itself works and plays for those who are completely new to this franchise. I wholeheartedly recommend the games on mobile, but does Frontiers, the first to arrive on Switch manage to convert the experience and stay faithful to the fun of the mobile version? Let’s see shall we…ġ0 Hours Played // Review Copy Provided // $14.99 I’ve played all the mainline releases on mobile so I found myself in quite an odd position writing this review.
If you saw our announcement preview, you’ll know how much I love the Kingdom Rush series.
